Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge

Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge

These jewels are dairy-free, gluten-free and there is no added sugar. I love these for a sweet craving with adding sugar to my diet. The Sync Chocolate powder contains no added sugars, is gluten-free and vegan. As always, use organic ingredients! You are worth it.

  • 1/2 c all-natural almond butter or peanut butter
  • 5 pitted Medjool dates
  • 1 scoop Modere Sync Chocolate Powder (or your favorite plant-based shake)

Process all ingredients in a Vitamix or food processor. If your dates are a bit hard, you can soak them in hot water for 5 minutes and drain the water before using. If the mix is a bit dry, add a splash of plant-based milk. Press into a pan, freeze, and enjoy! Top with almonds, pecans, or walnuts. I store them in the refrigerator but they won’t last long. Stay healthy.

Acai Superfood Bowl

Acai Superfood Bowl

Most mornings I drink a green smoothie. However, sometimes I want a change so I switch it up with either an acai bowl or overnight oats. Remember that these ingredients can be changed up based on seasonal availability so get creative. I also vary my omegas foods from chia, flax, hemp or whatever form I have available. Eating a variety of foods is key as it gives you a wide spectrum of nutrients plus eliminates food intolerances. Enjoy and be healthy. As always, purchase all ingredients local and/or organic. I use the One Degree Organic Foods gluten-free oats as they go the extra mile and test for glyphosate. Glyphosate is the key ingredient (toxin) in Round Up. Some of the other popular organic oats have been tested and found they contain glyphosate. Most grocery stores carry this brand in the smaller bags. I purchased the larger (2 lb 13 oz), more economical, bag from Whole Foods.

Ingredients

1 Packet frozen Sambazon Acai Superfruit pack

1/2 cup frozen strawberries and blueberries

1/4 c coconut chips or flakes

1 T chia seeds, 1/2 frozen banana

1/3 cup gluten-free sprouted oats (One Degree Organic Foods is my favorite)

Optional 1/2-1 scoop organic plant-protein powder

Blend until smooth and pour into a bowl. Top with fresh strawberries, banana, hemp seed and coconut chips. Enjoy as your cells will thank you!

Learning to Ask for Help

There are a hundred ways to learn to swim and one very easy way to drown, and that is by being unwilling to admit you’re drowning in the first place.

I love this quote by Rachel Hollis from her book, Girl Stop Apologizing.

This specific chapter is about women asking for help or the lack of asking for help. So I started reflecting on all the help I’ve had in my business throughout the years.

I’ve had numerous people comment on how much I have accomplished in life and business but until this moment did not correlate these accomplishments to the help that I have received. I know that I am using the gifts that God gave me but had lost sight that it was not about me and my gifts but also about a series of people, at various phases in my life, that helped me to make it all happen.

Asking for help did not come easy and it still doesn’t but the help that I received is instrumental in how I was able to attain my achievements. I in return, can serve as many people as possible.

If you have goals, and I hope that you do, you need to ask for help in achieving them. If you do not think that you can fit anything else in your life and have tabled your goals, please consider how not living in your values is impacting your quality of life and others. When you are living in your values, you feel it. You have a smile across your face, and you light up inside and out! When you have this joy and fulfillment in your life, it will greatly benefit those close to you. Enduring life is not a pretty site for anyone!

When I started pursuing some serious professional goals, our children were older and so childcare wasn’t an issue. However, there were still a lot of other needs and I wasn’t afraid to ask for help from my husband, who was willing to jump in. Our children also helped, just ask my son and he will gladly tell you I had him doing his own laundry by the time he was 11 or 12 years old! He’s also an excellent cook, which his future wife will truly thank me for.

It truly takes a team to be successful or an entire village, at times.  I started growing my business by hiring part-time assistants that would come into my home and help me with projects. I then hired someone to clean my home a couple of times a month. When I opened my wellness center, I’d ask friends and family to answer phones when I couldn’t afford the proper amount of staff.

When I was blessed to have more clients than I could support, I hired a young woman with a nutrition degree who could take some of the load off my plate. There were also the dreaded financials that I had to ask my husband to explain and review because I just didn’t get it.  Next, I hired a CPA to take care of my payroll and taxes after I struggled doing it on my own (and wow was that painful).  Also, at that time, I was finishing my degree and getting certifications in various areas of health, which in the future would serve so many women! I had to stay focused on my gifts and where my time needed to be spent.

When it was time for a website, I built the first one on my own, one LONG and painful weekend. I was told I should be able to do it in one day, which is a clear sign that this was not my gift. A few years later, I learned having a professional image was important and I paid to have someone create it and enhance SEO, which is much more important than a pretty appearance.

The more that I reflected on my business, the more I realized I had so much help in achieving my dream.

Today, I’ve stepped into another role in my career, developing women leaders and representing a nutrition company. I love empowering women to be well, physically and financially!

I’m supporting and leading a team across the US and in various parts of the world and I could never lead this team of 200 plus people without the help of the incredible ladies that step in and train, so that no one person takes on all of the load.  We divide and conquer, and we have it down to a science!

I now have a virtual assistant that does everything from making hotel reservations, to paying bills, and talking to clients and/or customers. I have no idea how I would function without her! Next time you talk to Patty, show her some love for all she manages (especially me)!

Have I always done this perfectly and asked for help? Heck no. I can tell you that in one season of my life, when I was doing it all, I ended up in severe adrenal fatigue. That’s some serious stuff where your entire body starts to shut down because you’ve burned the candle on both ends for far too long. Your body goes on strike and says, I quit! That’s God stepping in because I wasn’t smart enough to slow down, give control to others and let Him take over.  I learned the hard and painful way that I can’t do it all alone.

So, my message to you is, do not end up in that place. I’m lucky that it didn’t turn into something that could have ended my life. I was given a chance to learn a lesson and now I’m sharing the message with you.  Ask for help.  If you can’t afford it, trade with a friend or family member that needs help or a break too. Say it out loud with me, “I need the help of others!” No one will think you are weak or needy.  If they do think this, they are not your friends. Friends and family will most likely feel blessed because they can contribute to your goals and dreams. It doesn’t matter whether you want to take painting lessons or build a multi-million-dollar business, both equally important. You can do it all and have it all…if you solicit help!

If you need to reach out to someone because you don’t even know where to begin, I’d love to hear from you. Chat with me here.

Personal Care Products that could be Harming Your Family

As I was cleaning out cabinets, I decided to glance over the ingredient list of some hair care products that I used to use. To be honest, it scared me. I used to put these on my body and didn’t think about the impact to my skin, lungs or other vital organs!

Think about the personal care products that you and your family use on a daily basis…lotions, shampoo, conditioner, soap, sanitizer, nail polish, baby soaps, make up, perfumes/colognes, deodorant, toothpaste, laundry detergent.  EWG.org (Environmental Working Group) concluded in a study that on average people use 9 personal care products daily and applied an average of 126 unique ingredients on their skin daily. That’s a lot of chemicals!

Do you feel safe knowing that the government does not require long term safety studies or pre-market testing for most ingredients in personal care products? According to the FDA’s Office of Cosmetics and Colors, “a cosmetic manufacturer may use almost any raw material as a cosmetic ingredient and market the product without an approval from the FDA.” The cosmetic industry is authorized to police it’s own ingredient safety and many of these ingredients have the potential to harm humans and animals. The FDA panel has only banned 11 ingredients while the European Union has taken action on hundreds of toxic chemicals in cosmetics.

Your skin is your largest organ and is porous, so whatever you put on it will be absorbed within moments of application. And what about your lungs? You are inhaling the chemicals as well, even if you aren’t applying them to your skin.  If the products you use contain harmful ingredients such as harsh, toxic chemicals, colors, and fragrances, those ingredients make their way into your body, your blood and lymphatic system. The majority of mainstream personal care products contain carcinogenic chemicals, allergens, endocrine disruptors or xenoestrogens, irritants and can cause harm to your reproductive system. It is easy to see why it is so important to be diligent to watch what is in the products that you are using.

So what ingredients should you avoid? There are countless toxic ingredients in the products that we use on a daily basis and so it is important to do your research and always look at the ingredient list in everything that you buy. A few ingredients to avoid are fragrance, perfume, substances that generate formaldehyde (nearly 1 in 5 cosmetic products contains a substance that generates cancer causing formaldehyde–see list below), mineral oil and petroleum, parabens, ethanolmines (DEA, MEA, TEA), benzones, triclosan, heavy metals such as cadmium, aluminum, mercury, lead, and arsenic, phthalates, and styrene. This list unfortunately is not all-inclusive. Plus these chemicals are xenoestrogens which can disrupt our hormone balance and health.

You can easily switch over to safe products by accessing easy to use Apps and websites like ThinkDirty, EWG’s Skin Deep, and the Good Guide which will rate your personal care products for safety and toxicity. Always read the ingredient label and do not be fooled by labels such as natural and even partial organic products can contain harmful ingredients. I especially avoid parfum or fragrances as I will have an immediate reaction to these. Use products with the MADE SAFE® seal. Also, support hair and nail salons that offer safer and more natural products. I ask lots of questions before making an appointment and conduct my own research on their product lines. Knowing which companies test on animals is a top priority as well. Check out the company’s testing practices on sites such a PETA.org to find which do and do not test.

Avoid these ingredients/chemicals as they contains a formaldehyde-releasing chemical:

  • DMDM hydantoin
  • Imidazolidinyl urea
  • Diazolidinyl urea
  • Quaternium-15
  • Bronopol (2bromo2nitropropane1,3-diol )
  • 5-Bromo-5-nitro-1,3-dioxane
  • Hydroxymethylglycinate

For your safety, schedule time to review and clean out the harmful products that you are using and replace them with safe nontoxic options! I’d love to chat more about healthier options, set up your call here!

Chlorine Toxicity…Swimmers Beware

Did you know that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC ), swimming is the fourth most popular recreational activity for all ages in the United States? For kids ages 7-17, it is the most popular.

However, do we ever consider how clean the water is that we swim in? How polluted are our oceans, lakes and rivers? As we talk about all the chemicals that we come in contact with every day from cleaning products to personal hygiene, it started me thinking about the water in which we swim. What about chlorine in pools? According to the CDC, 1 in 8 routine pool inspections conducted during 2008 identified serious violations that threatened public health and safety and resulted in an immediate closure. Wow! Now that is something to think about. What about when a pool is “properly” maintained?

Of course, chlorine is the most common disinfect used in swimming pools. Disinfecting helps prevent the spread of water-borne diseases. Chlorine is known to react with residual organic matter such as  sweat, urine and skin cells in pool water forming volatile byproducts such as chloroform and other potent respiratory irritants. Long-term exposure to these chemicals is known to pose a variety of health risks, from respiratory irritation, asthma and an increased risk of cancer.

In 2008, a research collaboration between premier academic institutions from the U.S., Canada and Europe summarized findings of 18 different studies that all noted a link between exposure to chlorinated pools and increasing frequencies of allergic disease and asthma. This would include not only casual swimming but also Olympic swimmers, pool workers and lifeguards who spend a lot of time poolside.

What are some of the negative effects of prolonged exposure to the chlorine in pools? There seems to be a correlation between allergic diseases and chlorinated pool exposure. Especially in adolescents who swim the most often and stay in the water longer. The American Academy of Pediatrics conducted a study that links chlorine exposure from swimming pools to increased respiratory symptoms in adolescents age 13-18. If your child is a swimmer, you may ask is there a way to detox after swimming in chlorinated pools?

The most obvious is to eliminate exposure. If you have a home swimming pool that uses chlorine, consider changing to a salt water pool. The average cost can be as little as $1,500, which is a value to protect your families health.  If they swim competitively or in a public pool, then I would suggest a gentle detox several times a year.

I have found an organic tincture that can remove not only chlorine but toxic metals, pesticides and other chemicals. These organic herbal liquid tinctures are highly effective for individuals with organochlorides (chlorine) toxicities, as well as other types of heavy metal and chemical exposures. By adding a few drops into water before, during or after swimming there has been a reduction in organotoxins by 65% in just 6 weeks.  The company that makes the product is called Bioray and have been in business for over 20 years producing organic herbal supplements for both adults and children to naturally remove toxins and support immunity.

Liquid Soap, Harmless or Hazardous?

Not too long ago while visiting a relative’s house, I began to wash my hands with the liquid soap provided in the attractive dispenser. After being taken a back by the strong perfume smell, and I tried to re-wash to remove the overpowering smell to no avail. Finally with the use of some vinegar, I was able to eliminate the strong perfume smell. Next, I found the actual container to determine the ingredient list and was horrified!

Consider how many times per day you are using this to “clean” you hands but in fact you could be adding more toxins to your body and environment. This moment reinforced the need to be vigilant no matter where I am, to read labels and know what I am putting on or in my body. The number of toxic ingredients that are added to something so innocent as a soap product is killing our fish & wildlife and adding hazardous toxins into our body. Below is a list of just a few of the ingredients in this brand of liquid soap along with the toxicity concern courtesy of the Environmental Working Group (ewg.org).

HIGH CONCERN – Can include, but is not limited to: Developmental/reproductive toxicity, Biochemical or cellular level changes, Cancer, Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive) acute aquatic toxicity, skin irritation/allergies/damage, damage to DNA.

  • Methylchloroisothiazolinone (5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one), also referred to as MCI, is a preservative with antibacterial and anti-fungal effects within the group of isothiazolinones. It is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and fungi.
  • Methylisothiazolinone, MIT, or MI, (sometimes erroneously called methylisothiazoline), is a powerful synthetic biocide and preservative within the group of isothiazolinones, which is used in numerous personal care products and a wide range of industrial applications.
  • DMDM Hydantoin is an antimicrobial formaldehyde releaser preservative with the trade name Glydant. DMDM hydantoin is an organic compound belonging to a class of compounds known as hydantoins.
  • Sodium Hydroxide is a strongly alkaline white deliquescent compound used in many industrial processes, e.g., the manufacture of soap and paper.

MODERATE CONCERN – Some potential for hazards to health or the environment. Can include, but not limited to: Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive), Use restrictions, Contamination concerns.

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (commonly known as SLS) is a widely used and inexpensive chemical found in many mainstream personal hygiene products such as shampoos, toothpastes, mouthwashes, bodywash, soaps, detergents and body wash , along with Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and Ammonium Laurel Sulfate (ALS).
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) Is a mixture of closely related organic compounds derived from coconut oil and dimethylaminopropylamine. CAPB is available as a viscous pale yellow solution and it is used as a surfactant in personal care products.
  • Polyquaternium-7 is a synthetic polymer based on quaternary ammonium compounds.
  • Tetrasodium EDTA is a water-soluble ingredient used as a chelating agent in cosmetics and personal care products because of its ability to sequester metal ions and allow them to remain in formulas but lose their ability to react with other ingredients.
  • PEG 120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate is the polyethylene glycol ether of the diester of natural Methylglucoseand Oleic Acid. It is used in beauty products and cosmetics as a surfactant and emulsifier. It is used as a thickener in hair and skin care products.
  • Poloxamer 124 (P1168) is a surfactant and emulsifying agent… In cosmetic and personal care product formulations, it functions as a surfactant – emulsifying agent and surfactant – solubilizing agent. It can be used in soaps and cleansers. It is soluble in water.
  • Benzophenone-4 is a white sweet-smelling crystalline solid used mainly in the manufacture of organic compounds and in perfume.

SOME CONCERN – Can include, but not limited to: skin irritation/allergies/damage, acute aquatic toxicity, nervous system effects, respiratory effects, biodegradation.

  • Fragrance (Parfum) a substance, extract, or preparation for diffusing or imparting an agreeable or attractive smell.

This is just one example of a typical household product. Despite the known dangers associated with many of the ingredients in personal care products and cleaning products, some manufacturers continue to use them. Many household products carry health risks for not only you, but also your children, pets, wildlife or the environment. Reading labels can go a long way in helping protect your family.

My 3-day Cleanse Journey – Day 2

Day 1 is done! So where do you think I struggled most? I caught myself in my daily habit of getting up from my desk to grab a snack. I realized that when I feel stressed, overwhelmed or anxious, I distract myself with a snack. Most of you know I am not grabbing a candy bar or cookie (we eat predominantly whole, clean) but, eating when your body doesn’t need food is not healthy! So how did I cope knowing that I couldn’t grab a snack? I decided to try some deep breathing and downloaded a meditation app. I believe this is a new healthy habit that I will incorporate long after the cleanse.

As far as detox symptoms, I dropped a couple pounds (toxins!) and had a few minor headaches throughout the day as well. My tongue has the usual thick white coating which is a sure sign of detoxing. But overall, I had great clarity and focus. My overall sense of well-being has improved. Less anxious. More calm.

My sugar cravings have subsided much faster than I imagined as well. The dark chocolate bar stashed in my freezer is no longer calling me!

The biggest benefit was not having to think about what we are having for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Then you have prep time, cook time and cleanup, so time savings was an unexpected positive benefit.

I was also blessed that my husband joined me, so the temptations were not there. If I had to prepare a meal for someone else, I’m sure it would have been a bit more challenging. If you have children heading to summer camp or, your hubby is traveling, this would be a great time to try a cleanse/fast.

I’m not sure I can say it was easy but, it wasn’t that hard. When you are drinking juice every 2 hours from 7am to 7pm, it helps you focus on that task. I rewarded myself at the end of the day with an organic bubble bath and some lavender essential oil. Sending a positive message to the brain is important when tackling something new or a bit more challenging then the norm.

My 3-day Cleanse Journey

It’s day one of my 3-day cleanse which started with a 2.5-mile walk on July 4th. What a perfect day to celebrate freedom from toxins! Instead of focusing on what I won’t be eating, I’m focusing on the benefits such as mental clarity, focus, and increased energy.

I prepared my body by eliminating meat and increased my consumption of fresh, raw organic fruits and vegetables. If you consume alcohol, caffeine, or dairy on a regular basis, I  would eliminate these products a few days before as well. Except for an occasional (organic) ice cream, I swore off these vices years ago. However, with dark chocolate, I still have issues!

I typically make my own juices but due to time constraints and the fact I sold my juicer a few years back (in lieu of a Vitamix), I purchased the organic juices from a local company called Sunshine Juice. I’m not being paid to endorse their products, I just wanted to share my experience with others. Their cleanse consists of seven juices per day which you consume every two hours.

It’s been several years since my husband and I fasted. He is a great support as he offered to join me…with modifications (as he tossed the pound of grass-fed beef back in the freezer). His modified liquid diet will consist of using our favorite plant-based powder, Juice Plus Complete, with almond milk. We’ve used the shakes for several years (love them) and this is what I will transition to prior to starting back on whole food.

I remember how much fun with had with it last time as we started to get a little slap-happy around the second and third day. Watching television wasn’t a good idea as we realized almost every commercial promoted food! Even though most of it isn’t stuff we would ever eat, it all started to look good. We decided that reading was our best bet and I spent lots of time in prayer and meditation.

For me, this isn’t about weight loss, although I put on a few extra pounds over the winter. Cleansing is more for the emotional and spiritual aspects of my life. Spending time with my creator without distractions is my ultimate goal.

Can You Handle the Truth?

Can You Handle the Truth?

A couple years ago I discovered a great book called One Word that will change your life. The book inspired me to create a one word theme for my personal and professional life. My word this year is Truth!

As a chronic people pleaser, I sometimes avoid the truth. It’s not that I outright lie but it’s more I’m not being true to myself or being true to the person God called me to be. You truly cannot serve two masters; it’s either man or God.

When you try to be all things to all people, you start to become someone you are not. And know, you may not like this other person that you become. I’ve withheld truth from my friends and family far too long and realize this serves no one and could actually do harm in certain situations. We withhold truth to avoid hurting someone’s feelings but we must consider the truth may help them to grow.

So this year, it’s the year of truth. I’m speaking the truth in love. Someone close to me recently told me a truth that initially hurt me. She brought to light a character flaw that was causing others to hurt. However painful it was to hear, my love and respect for this person escalated beyond measure. My husband has always had the gift of speaking truth in love (although the delivery may lack gentleness at times).

Whatever method the truth is delivered, it creates an opportunity for growth as we typically grow the most through adversity. I’ve in turn shared my feelings/truth with people that I’ve kept hidden inside for years. Sharing my feelings has allowed me to trust and help others see me for who I really am.

Part of my truth journey is cleaning my house literally and figuratively. I’ve eliminated clutter from my home, office and mind. I’ve unsubscribed, unfriended, opted out of groups, events or services that no longer speak to my truth. When you are in constant response mode to email, texts and Messenger, you are living by other’s agendas and being controlled by their needs. Seeing the balance between serving and being a slave to others is where the balance lies.

I’ve also eliminated exposure to people in my life that aren’t of truth or are in alignment with my goals and mission. I’m protecting my God-time and sacred positive energy. We have to continually fill our cup/mind with messages of hope, positivity, love and abundance. My focus is on making a huge impact in the world. Therefore, I’m not accepting excuses or negativity from myself or others. Saying “no” to people and things that are not in alignment with my purpose means saying “YES!” to freedom (my word in 2016) and truth.

Truth is sincerity of actions and character, not just the absence of a lie. Truth is the self-expression of God. Be true to who God called you to be. He doesn’t call us to play small in this world. I challenge you to find your truth and step out in faith this year.

If this resonates with you and you’re ready to say YES to the things that light you up inside check out our frequently asked questions to see how we can help you. We’d love to chat more about the programs we offer!

Why you won’t see me wearing a fitness tracker

Fitness TrackerTechnology, for the most part, is great! It has changed the way we act, think, communicate and yes, it has even changed the way we track our physical activity; but have we crossed the line? Could the popularity of these fitness tracking devices actually put your health at risk? The answer is a big, resounding YES!

I continually remind people, especially women (and their children), not to sleep with their cell phones next to their head or keep it on their body constantly; and now, someone creates a device that is made to be worn 24/7, even while sleeping!

It’s important to understand that ALL wireless and electronic devices emit either high or low frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and EMF’s have been linked to cancer. I find it ironic that a so-called “health gadget” is, in actuality, negatively affecting our long-term health. To make things worse, many employers have decided to make wearing a fitness tracking device mandatory for employees as an incentive to help them reduce overall health insurance costs.

The Working Group classified ELF-EMFs as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”,
based on limited evidence from human studies in relation to childhood leukemia.

In addition, there have been 2,300 studies by the US Navy showing biological impacts of EMF exposure. A 2016 study by the National Toxicology Program shares preliminary results showing that cell phone radiation causes cancer in rats. This study is the gold standard of EMF research and makes it clear that our current wireless safety standards do not adequately protect the public.

While physical activity is important, a person’s level of physical activity is only one small component of their overall health. In fact, some of the most active people can often be the least healthy. Take athletes for example. People make assumptions that athletes must be extremely healthy, yet that is not always true. Many athletes have little or no nutritional knowledge. If we could attach a camera to individuals who embrace this mindset and evaluate their lifestyles, we would discover that many people are eating toxin-laden foods.

True health begins with feeding and detoxing the cells, which can only be found in whole clean food; free of additives, preservatives, hormones, steroids, GMO’s and/or other toxins. Listen closely and you will often hear me say, “skinny is not healthy, nor can you out exercise a bad diet.”

Keep in mind that it is also important to take into consideration the amount of stress these devices may create. One of the most dangerous contributors to the increase in adrenal stress is constant mental and physical exertion. In other words, telling someone they have to meet a certain amount of steps or physical exertion could have a serious negative impact on their health.

I love to see people becoming aware of their health and the positive impact of physical movement; however, do we really need more EMF exposure to make this happen? What about the peace of strolling through nature untethered versus the stress of something monitoring your every movement? Could this monitoring activity create continual emotional stress of feeling like you’re not measuring up to a one-size fits all standard?

So it’s time to ditch the device and refuse to limit your health goals with measuring steps or miles. Get out and experience some fun, sweaty activity….. just the way God and nature intended.
