Weight loss gets harder after 50, and I found that out for myself on a random Sunday morning with the smell of cinnamon rolls filling up my kitchen.
My husband had snuck a package into the cart the day before. I found them at checkout and asked him how in the world they got there. He told me they “jumped in on their own” and he “had nothing to do with it.” That man keeps me laughing.
But that cinnamon roll moment is exactly why I want to talk about commitment today. Around 45% of people make some kind of promise to eat better or move more this time of year. Sounds simple enough, until your body starts working against you in ways it never used to.
Here’s what nobody tells you about this stage of life. Your hormones are shifting. Your metabolism has slowed down. You’re losing muscle just from getting older, whether you’re doing anything wrong or not. That means the same slice of cake that barely touched you at 35 can wreck your blood sugar and your mood for the rest of the day at 55. Cravings hit harder. The scale moves slower. Sleep gets messed with, which messes with your appetite the next day too. This is not you losing willpower. This is your body changing, and it asks for a different kind of commitment than it used to.
So when your husband brings home junk food, or your grown kids won’t touch a vegetable, that is not your excuse to throw in the towel either. I hear this all the time. “My spouse eats whatever he wants.” “My kids won’t eat what I eat.” I understand it, but your hormones don’t care what’s in his cart. They only care what’s in yours.
I didn’t eat the cinnamon roll. Was I tempted? Sure was. But I thought about how my blood sugar would swing an hour later, and how much rougher that swing feels now than it did years ago. I also thought about the guilt of breaking a promise to myself. That guilt isn’t worth one bite.
I believe God gave us one body to care for, and how we treat it is part of how we honor Him. That doesn’t mean never enjoying a treat. It means asking whether this choice is moving you toward the health you’re asking Him for, especially now that your body needs more intention than it used to, not less.
Here’s something I’ve learned walking women through this stage of life for years: a 100% commitment is actually easier to keep than a 90% one. Think about your surgeon or your pilot. Would you want them operating at 95% commitment? A wavering mind wears you out because you’re negotiating with yourself all day long, and after 50, you don’t have energy to waste on that fight. When the decision is already made, there’s nothing left to argue about.
That’s really what this comes down to. Decide ahead of time, knowing your body plays by different rules now. Then when the cinnamon rolls show up, and they will, you already know what you’re going to do.
