Understanding Food Intolerance and Food Sensitivity

What do the following healthy foods all have in common?

  • ACORN SQUASH
  • BLUEBERRY
  • LEMON
  • TOMATO
  • WILD RICE
  • ZUCCHINI
  • SQUASH
  • EGG WHITES

These are foods that I learned through testing that I had a moderate or severe food intolerance to. This is important to know as food intolerances and food sensitivities cause chronic inflammation. Food intolerance manifests a wide array of symptoms from gastrointestinal, fatigue, headache, migraines, arthritis and brain fog. These types of sensitivities affect 80% of the population. However, food intolerance does not cause immediate allergic symptoms.

Two more foods that made it to my reaction list are gluten and casein, which seem to be quite prevalent. The scary part is that I was sure I wasn’t  sensitive to gluten. I’m really glad I conducted the testing and didn’t rely on my limited knowledge at that time (2013).

Food intolerance and food sensitivity can vary based on stress levels, eating habits, medical conditions, nutritional status, hormone levels, medications, change of season, and other factors that impact the immune system.

Intolerances and sensitivities can be measured via the ALCAT Test. It’s a simple blood test for food and chemical sensitivities. ALCAT testing identifies food, chemical, and herbal sensitivities where the symptom onset is longer (several hours to days) and varied (typical in chronic conditions).

ALCAT testing does not identify immediate IgE food allergies.
This valuable testing answered questions for me as I was baffled why I was still having high levels of inflammation eating a predominantly whole, clean (organic) food diet.

I’ve attached a copy of my test results from the Platinum Comprehensive Panel, which tests for the following:

  • 200 Foods
  • 50 Functional Foods and Medicinal Herbs
  • 20 Food Additives/Colorings
  • 10 Environmental Chemicals
  • 21 Molds
  • 20 Antibiotics/Anti-Inflammatory Agents

Along with the comprehensive personalized results is included a 4-day Rotation Plan Guide. You can move foods around as long as you keep a food diary. Mild Intolerance foods can be eaten one day and then omitted in your diet for at least 3 days to avoid a cumulative sensitizing effect.

Another bonus of the testing is that you receive a consultation with a Nutritionist to review the results and help you with food rotation and planning.

ALCAT testing is also widely used for athletes who want a competitive edge. ALCAT results instruct them in personalized dieting to help increase strength and normalize weight.

Health Issues from Busyness

Health Issues from Busyness

Most of us are busy.  We have packed schedules, commitments, and are often quite overextended, especially during the holidays. Daily life comes along with endless activities, opportunities, and commitments. Before we know it we are exhausted, fatigued, anxious, and possibly even depressed. All these can lead to a degradation of our immune system which naturally opens the door for chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer.

Let’s talk about the word “busy”.  We wear it like a badge of honor or maybe an Olympic gold medal.  We compare ourselves to others thinking no one can be busier than we are!

Webster defines busy as:

1. engaged in action

2. full of activity

3. foolishly or intrusively active

4. full of distracting detail

My definition of busy (when used as an excuse for not doing what is best regarding health, business, etc.) is the person has not made ____(fill in the blank with health, self-care, business. etc.) a priority in their life. Interestingly enough, when a client comes to me for weight loss they struggle with making their health a priority and/or lack discipline.  However, with a client comes to me with cancer, they have all the time and resources needed to fight it. They are no longer “too busy”.

This is why detoxing from busyness is a priority and why downtime is crucial as well.  Downtime is essential for our bodies as it allows us to relax, regenerate and heal. A body in a constant state of stress (busyness) is a body unable to heal itself. Lots of healing happens within the body while we lay idle under those sheets for hopefully at least seven to nine hours a night.
Instead of falling victim to excessive busyness this week, try to carve out some rest and relaxation time, for yourself. Resist the urge to go-go-go. Got to bed early one night, shut off the alarm clock, and have a morning of sleeping in. Maybe even leave the day unstructured to continue the downtime and relaxation. Your body will thank you. I’d love to chat about ways to slow down and how that will help your overall health. Book a complementary call here!
What do you do to stay out of the busyness trap?

Health Issues from Unwanted Organisms

Health Issues from Unwanted Organisms

“It is estimated that approximately 95% of the American population is infected with a unwanted organism of some kind.”

Most people do not know the symptoms of unwanted organisms, this is how so many become infected and do not even know about it. To make identification even harder many organism infections can be dormant and then spring to life.

Identifying your risk level for unwanted organisms based on your lifestyle choices and preferences can be an extremely helpful tool, this is why I am sharing this article with you today. Knowing what increases your risk for unwanted organisms and knowing the possible symptoms of infection will help you to spot trouble and seek help.

About Unwanted Organisms:

There are hundreds of different unwanted organisms such as tapeworms, to pinworms to many others. Unwanted organisms can be amoeba, bacteria, fungi, molds, worms, spores or even ticks.

Be aware that symptoms of unwanted organism infection can come and go but they may still point to an underlying unwanted organism infection because of their reproductive cycles. The various developmental stages of unwanted organisms often produce a variety of metabolic toxins and mechanical irritations in several areas of the body. For example, pinworms can stimulate asthmatic attacks because of their movement into the upper respiratory tract.

To identify your own risk level for unwanted organisms answer the following questions and note the number of items you can answer “yes” to each one.

For Adults:

  • Have you ever been to Africa, Asia, Central or South America, China, Europe, Isreal, Mexico or Russia?
  • Have you traveled to the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Hawaii, or other tropical islands?
  • Do you frequently swim in freshwater lakes, ponds or streams while abroad?
  • Did you serve overseas while in the military?
  • Were you a prisoner of war in World War II, Korea, or Vietnam?
  • Have you had a elevated while blood count, intestinal problems, night sweats or unexplained fever during or since traveling abroad?
  • Is your water supply from a mountainous area?
  • Do you drink untested water?
  • Have you ever drunk from lakes, rivers, or streams on hiking or camping trips without first boiling or filtering it?
  • Do you use plain tap water to clean your contact lenses?
  • Do you use regular tap water that is unfiltered for colonics or enemas?
  • Can you traces the onset of symptoms (intermittent constipation and diarrhea, muscle aches and pains, night sweats, unexplained eye ulcers) to any of the above?
  • Do you regularly eat unpeeled raw fruits and raw vegetables in salads?
  • Do you frequently eat in Armenian, Chinese, Ethiopian, Filipino, Green, Indiana, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Pakistani, Thai or vegetarian restaurants; in delicatessens, fast-food restaurants, steak houses, or sushi or salad bars?
  • Do you use a microwave oven for cooking (as opposed to reheating) beef, fish or pork?
  • Do you prefer fish or meat that is undercooked, i.e., rare or medium rare?
  • Do you frequently eat hot dogs made from pork?
  • Do you enjoy raw fish dishes like Dutch green herring, latin American ceviche, sushi and/or sashimi?
  • Do you enjoy raw meat dishes like Italian carpaccio, Middle Eastern Kibbe, or Steak tartare?
  • Do you have persistent acne, anal itching, anemia, anorexia, bad breath, bloody stools, chronic fatigue, difficulty in breathing, edema, food sensitivities, itching, open ileocecal valve, pale skin, palpitations, PMS, puffy eyes, ringing of the ears, sinus congestion, skin eruptions, vague abdominal discomfort, or vertigo?
  • Do you grind your teeth?
  • Are you experiencing craving for sugar, depressions, disorientation, insomnia, lethargy, loss of appetite, moodiness, or weight loss or gain?

For Children:

  • Does your child have dark circles under her eyes?
  • Is your child hyperactive?
  • Does your child grind or clench his teeth at night?
  • Does your child constantly pick her nose or scratch her behind?
  • Does your child have a habit of eating dirt?
  • Does your child wet his bed?
  • Is your child often restless at night?
  • Does your child cry often for no reason?
  • Does your child tear her hair out?
  • Does your child have a limp that orthopedic treatment has not helped?
  • Does your child have brassy, staccato-type cough?
  • Does your child have convulsions or an abnormal electroencephalogram (EEG)?
  • Does your child have recurring headaches?
  • Is your child unusually Sensitive to light and prone to blinking frequently, eyelid twitching, or squinting?
  • Does your child have unusual tendencies to bleed in the gums, the nose, or the rectum?

For Infants:

  • Does your baby have severe intermittent colic?
  • Does your baby persistently bang her or her head against the crib?
  • Is your baby a chronic crier?
  • Does your baby show a blotchy rash around the perianal area?

Interpretation of unwanted organism risk level:

40 or more: If you answered “yes” to more than forty items, you may be at high risk for unwanted organisms.

30 or more:  If you answered “yes” to more than thirty items, you may be at moderate risk for unwanted organisms.

20 or more: If you answered “yes” to more than twenty items, you may be at risk.

Some wonder why they should even care about unwanted organism infections, especially when they aren’t suffering from any major health issues. Remember, unwanted organisms rob your body of precious nutrients and can even begin eating their hosts over time. Plus they definitely play a role in what you crave, what you consume and how well your body is able to function.

Health Issues from IBS

Health Issues from IBS

I remember like it was yesterday waking in the middle of the night in extreme pain. Many nights were spent lying on the bathroom floor in tears.  The dilemma was “not knowing which end was up” as my dad would say.  Would it be vomiting from the pain and constipation or would it be diarrhea?  The options were not good!  My life and career were impacted as I would schedule my travel dates around my menstrual cycle as I knew the symptoms would be most severe during these times. It seriously impacted my ability to function at home and at work.

What is IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is not a disease, it is a functional disorder.  This means that the bowel is not working as it should.  Women typically experience more severe symptoms than men due to menstruation.  IBS is also known as spastic colon and impacts about 20-50% of the population.

Symptoms of IBS

IBS is characterized by its symptoms:  chronic but intermittent lower abdominal pain or discomfort in association with diarrhea, chronic constipation, or both. Gas and bloating are common, but vomiting isn’t, though it can occur due to nausea from the pain and constipation.

IBS attacks may strike suddenly at any time of day or night and may occasionally wake you from a sound sleep.  Unfortunately, for me, this was the norm.  So besides the painful symptoms, I was missing critical sleep which ensured the next day would not be good, and was setting my body up for long-term health issues from lack of sleep.

So, what did I do to overcome IBS?

Again, this is what worked for me and each of our bodies is unique.  Well, the medications didn’t work.  They only added ” insult to injury” by adding additional toxins to my body.  Although I could write a book on all my wellness lifestyle changes over the years, I will share a few key concepts to my healing.

First, I kicked the caffeine habit and removed soft drinks, black teas, and coffee from my diet.  Caffeine creates an acidic environment in the body which increases inflammation and pain.  Caffeine also stresses the body which would escalate symptoms.

Second, I eliminated sugar.  Remember, it is not just the obvious (cookies, candy, soda) that is the culprit.  It is the hidden sugars that we don’t consider or aren’t obvious.   Read ingredient labels on ketchup, salad dressings, bread, crackers, etc.  High fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, sucralose, aspartame, etc. are all forms of sugar.  White bread, rice, and pasta convert to sugar in our body which creates inflammation.  Even certified organic foods may contain large amounts of sugar.

Next, I incorporated “raw and live” foods such as fruits, vegetables, and greens which were either fresh or frozen.  At that time my idea of eating fruits and vegetables was canned corn and green beans.  Canned foods are “dead” foods because they lack enzymes and nutrients key to allowing our body to heal naturally. Organic foods are best or local produce that has not been heavily sprayed with herbicides and pesticides. Try your local Farmer’s Market or consider a service like Misfits Market outside of growing season.

Lastly, I started drinking more water.  At least 8-10 glasses per day of purified or distilled (NOT tap).  Water is a major component of healing and detox.

Regarding supplements, two key components for IBS are prebiotics and probiotics along with digestive enzymes. I found a combination of pre, pro and postbiotics along with a digestive enzyme to get you started. I recommend digestive health testing to determine specifics, but these are great products to get your started and get relief.

Again, these are just a few of the changes I made that made a difference.   There is no “magic pill” that will make it go away.  It takes positive and consistent changes to your diet.   If you want a comprehensive plan from someone who has been there and doesn’t want to figure it out the hard way, I would love to help. Health Issues from Processed Foods

Health Issues from Processed Foods

Most people know that processed foods aren’t the healthiest food options out there but many don’t realize they can actually be the trigger for numerous health issues. Health issues from additives in processed foods are quite common and totally avoidable when you know what to look out for. Better yet, start consuming whole, clean unprocessed foods direct from nature to eliminate the risks.

12 Key Additives to Avoid and Their Health Risks

1. Hydrogenated fats (aka Trans Fats) are regularly found in processed foods, even those labeled as zero trans fat! in the United States if a food has less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving, the food label can read 0 grams trans fat. Hydrogenated fats may lead to cardiovascular disease and obesity.

2. Artificial food colors. Processed foods are laden with artificial colors added to make foods seem more appealing after being processed. Artificial colors have been shown to lead to health issues such as allergies, asthma, and hyperactivity (ADD & ADHD); they are possible carcinogens.

3. Nitrites and nitrates found in most processed meats, lunch meat, bacon, etc are problematic as these substances can develop into nitrosamines in the body, which can be carcinogenic and cause health issues with the liver, bladder, and other organs often leading to toxic health effects. Studies have  also linked nitrosamines to cancer.

4. Sulfites (sulfur dioxide, metabisulfites, and others) can cause allergic and asthmatic reactions.

5. Sugar and sweeteners. These may lead to health issues like obesity, dental cavities, diabetes, and hypoglycemia as well as to increased triglycerides (blood fats) or candida (yeast).

6. Artificial sweeteners (aspartame, acesulfame-K, and saccharin). These have been linked to behavioral health problems, hyperactivity, and allergies and they are possibly carcinogenic. The government cautions against the use of any artificial sweetener by children and pregnant women. Splenda™ (sucralose) has also been added to this list.

7. MSG (monosodium glutamate) is known for causing common allergic and behavioral reactions including headaches, dizziness, chest pains, depression, and mood swings; it is also a possible neurotoxin.

8. Preservatives (BHA, BHT, EDTA, THBQ, and others). These may cause allergic reactions, hyperactivity, and possibly cancer; BHT may be toxic to the nervous system and the liver.

9. Artificial flavors. These are often MSG in disguise and they may cause allergic or behavioral reactions.

10. Refined flour. Overloads your body with low-nutrient calories which may lead to health issues like obesity, carbohydrate imbalances, and altered insulin production.

11. Salt. Excess salt may lead to fluid retention and blood pressure increases.

12. Olestra (an artificial fat). This may cause diarrhea and digestive disturbances. Frito Lay now markets olestra containing foods as their Lay’s Light line.

OTHER CONCERNS

  • Food waxes. The protective coatings applied to produce, as in cucumbers, peppers, and apples, may trigger allergies and can contain pesticides, fungicide sprays, or animal by-products.
  • Plastic packaging. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is carcinogenic and may cause immune reactions and lung irritation.

Again, I always recommend consuming whole foods that don’t have an ingredient label, meaning unprocessed foods. If you absolutely must reach for processed convenience foods, work to avoid the above top 12 additives shared above.

Health Issues from Electromagnetic Radiation

Health Issues from Electromagnetic Radiation

Do you ever wonder about the effects your cell phone, computer or wireless interent might have on you? The topic is gaining much momentum as researchers and consumers begin to take a closer look at Electromagnetic sensitivity and electromagnetic field, also known as EMF, protection.

What is EMF anyway?

Everyone is exposed to a complex mix of weak electric and magnetic fields, both at home and at work, from the generation and transmission of electricity, domestic appliances and industrial equipment, to telecommunications and broadcasting.

Electrical currents are everywhere. Tiny electrical currents normally exist in the human body due to the chemical reactions that occur as part of the normal bodily functions, even in the absence of external electric fields. Nerves relay signals by transmitting electric impulses. Most biochemical reactions from digestion to brain activities go along with the rearrangement of charged particles.

Both electric and magnetic fields induce voltages and currents in the body. If our bodies are electrical by nature and we are also experiencing a number of external electrical stimuli it makes sense that these external electrical stimulations can adversely impact the body.

In the book, Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family (Dutton, 2010), Dr. Devra Davis takes a look at the controversy surrounding cell phone use and its possible link to brain cancer and other human health impacts.

Like many, Davis was skeptical about the ties between cell phone use and cancer. However, after just under a decade of poring over the research, she is now warning about the dangers of cell phone radiation. Green America editor Tracy Fernandez Rysavy talked to Dr. Davis about why she’s concerned about widespread cell phone use, and why it’s so vital to protect our children from cell phone radiation, even in the face of some uncertainty of harm. To read the interview and learn more click here.

I am personally very wary of cellphone and electronic impacts on the body. I use and highly recommend electromagnetic field (EMF) protection to everyone because I believe it is important.

Why is EMF protection important for me?

Nearly everyone functions among the technologic advancements of modern life. Cell phones, wireless internet, computers, smart meters, bluetooth devices, etc are a way of life now and they sure make things convenient… but at what price? If you have wireless technology in your home or work place, protection is important. If you are a cell phone user you also need to protect yourself.

Still unsure about the health impacts? In Maine, legislators are considering adding disclaimers to cell phones that would sate “This device emits electromagnetic radiation, exposure to which may cause brain cancer.”  Source: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1969732,00.html#ixzz2MhR5avFc

Just as you buckle up in the car, you are better safe than sorry right? The same should go for EMF protection especially since so much is still unknown.

Now, some people are clearly more impacted by EMFs than others. Those that are particularly bothered are deemed “EMF sensitive” and they experience some very troublesome symptoms.

What do EMF health issues look like?

Electromagnetic reactions often manifest in the following ways:

  •  A warm or burning sensation in the face somewhat like feeling sunburnt
  • A tingling or prickling sensation across the face or other parts of the body
  • Extreme dryness of mucus membranes such as the back of the throat and eyes
  • A swelling of the mucus membranes such as nose, throat, ears and sinuses without any infectious cause
  • Problems with concentration, loss of memory and dizziness
  • A feeling of impending influenza (flu) that somehow never quite breaks out
  • Headaches and nausea
  • Teeth and jaw pains
  • Aches and pains in muscles and joints
  • Cardiac palpitations

I’ve even heard some complain of increased stress, erratic emotions and even insomnia that is attributed to Electromagnetic field or EMF sensitivity.

EMF protection is obviously designed to protect you but many don’t realize it can also make you feel and perform better throughout the day regardless of potential sensitivity to EMF’s.

How does EMF protection work and who needs?

Still not sure about EMF’s and how protection works? Watch this quick video about how EMF protection works and who can benefit from it.

EMF protection is certainly for everyone because everyone has a “biofield” to protect and enhance. For myself, sitting at a computer and working on my cellphone means I certainly need EMF protection and I do feel more frazzled and less productive without mine.

Even if you aren’t experiencing EMF sensitivity you can gain much from EMF protection. Often times you never realize how much you have been impacted until you begin protecting yourself.

Here is an overview of some of the studies and the ways others have found positive results…

Athletes are turning to EMF protection to boost their strength and performance.

Results displayed a positive direct correlation between those who wore a Q-Link® and those that scored greater on both total body strength and cognitive flexibility. A resultant average improvement in total body strength of 6.05% was noted for males and 5.72% for females tested.

Children are even benefiting from lowered stress and anxiety thanks to EMF protection.

A double-blind study conducted by David Eichler, PhD, Behavioral Consultant, indicates that the Q-Link ClearWave (an ‘Active’ SRT product), helps to reduce anxiety experienced in students while in the public school setting. The study involved a school district in Northeast Kansas. The implications of reduced anxiety can be improved classroom performance and improvement in overall attitude and well-being of the student. Source: Effects of Q-Link SRT ClearWave on Anxiety Levels within the Classroom.

Reduce stress and increase energy with EMF protection!

If you are looking to protect yourself, to increase productivity or improve energy then EMF protection is for you and it is very affordable! I use and recommend Q-link products that you can find out more about here. They are available in an array of simple, sporty or elegant product options ranging in price from about $25 and up. Protection and enhanced physical and emotional performance are attainable to virtually anyone.

What is your experience with EMFs?

how to soak and sprout nuts

How to Soak Nuts

How to Soak Nuts

Before we answer how to soak nuts, we must answer why you should.  Nuts and seeds could be wreaking havoc on your digestion as you may not be assimilating them. It is true, nuts and seeds along with grains and legumes contain natural toxic inhibitors to ensure their survival until germination.  Nature has made them indigestible in their dry form. Soaking removes the inhibitors and makes them more digestible allowing your body to utilize more vital nutrients contained within.

Benefits of soaking nuts and seeds:

  • Increases enzyme activity
  • Better absorption of nutrients by the body
  • Increased digestibility
  • Soaked nuts and seeds will begin the sprouting process which increases their nutrient value
  • Improves flavor, especially with walnuts as the tannins, dust, and residues are rinsed away

Most unsoaked or raw nuts and seeds contain enzyme inhibitors and toxic substances. Nature has intended the dry nut and seed to be protected by enzyme inhibitors and toxic substances until perfect growing conditions are in place. When there is enough rain and sun, this sets the stage for the nut/seed to literally come alive. When soaking nuts and seeds, we mimic nature.

Another important reason to soak nuts is that the soaking process will help remove the dust, residue, and tannins from the skins. You’ll notice that soaked walnuts do not have that astringent taste to them. This is because when soaking walnuts, the tannins are rinsed away, leaving behind a softer, tastier nut.

Nuts should only be soaked after they are removed from their shells. You’ll notice that nuts without skins such as macadamias, cashews or Brazil nuts don’t have as much of the murky water residue, but soaking is still recommended for ease in blending and for nutritional purposes.

Recommended soaking time for nuts and seeds:

Soaking nuts and seeds can take anywhere from 20 minutes, to 2 to 3 hours, even overnight in the refrigerator. Harder nuts will take longer to soften. If your recipe calls for soaked nuts or seeds and you are short on time, you can soak them for 20 minutes or at the very least rinse them. Otherwise, plan ahead and soak or sprout them according to the chart below.

Soaking nuts in plastic is not recommended as plastic can leach into the water and into your food. Some folks keep a variety of nuts and seeds soaking in their refrigerators at all times to have handy. If you do this, be sure to change the soak water every couple of days to prevent spoiling.

Note: the soaked water from nuts and seeds should always be discarded and never used as water in a recipe. Also, be sure the water you are using is purified or distilled.

Here is a helpful soaking and sprouting infographic for nuts and seeds as well as grains and legumes.  Click the image to see an enlarged version.

Health Issues from Synthetic Vitamin Supplements

Health Issues from Synthetic Vitamin Supplements

The knee-jerk reaction to a nutritionally imbalanced diet is usually synthetic supplementation. Why?  It’s easy.  “I didn’t consume enough calcium today (or ever).  Take a supplement, that’ll prevent me from getting osteoporosis or fill it whatever other disease!”

Whether you are taking supplements per a health professional’s recommendation or self prescribing, you could be doing more damage than good! I’d like to share why below.

Did you know that about 40% of supplements are contaminated or they don’t contain what they say the do? Additionally, most people fail to read the nutrition label on supplements or do their research before buying and many supplements contain dyes, preservatives, gluten, soy and even some GMO ingredients. These are things you are likely taking some effort to avoid in your day to day eating but then your nutritional supplement might be containing these things. Also, don’t think because it is in a health food store that is either healthy or safe.

Did you know, if you are self prescribing supplements without concrete knowledge of what you body does or doesn’t lack then you aren’t helping yourself any and you could also be doing some damage?

Additionally, synthetic supplements are unnatural and often times not fully convertible to nutrients in the body, plus they can often be toxic. Joel Fuhrman, MD recently discussed this. He shares that studies linked Folic acid in multivitamins to breast cancer, excerpt of his paper is below:

“Women who take conventional multivitamins may be endangering their health. A nine year study in Sweden found that women who took multivitamins were actually more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Why?

The researchers think that it could be the high dose of folic acid found in most multivitamins.

Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate, one of the B vitamins. Natural folate, abundant in green vegetables, is known for preventing neural tube defects during early pregnancy, and is also important for immune function, cardiovascular health, and cancer prevention.

Taking synthetic folic acid is not the same as getting natural folate from plant foods. The body processes folate and folic acid differently. Real folate from food is protective, fake folate from supplements may be dangerous:

  • A study compared breast cancer mortality rates between women who took folic acid during their pregnancy and those that did not. Thirty years later those women who followed the typical recommendations to take folic acid were twice as likely to die from breast cancer.
  • A 10-year study on women taking multivitamins concluded that those who took multivitamins containing folic acid increased their breast cancer risk by 20-30%.
  • A study investigating both food folate and synthetic folic acid found that only supplemental folic acid increased breast cancer risk. In other studies, women with low levels of food folate intake were more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer.”

Did you know that synthetic vitamins are man made in the lab? They are concentrated chemical ingredients. You heard it, chemical ingredients. Plus, most companies get their “vitamins” or chemicals from a leftover process of some other companies manufacturing process.

Nature intended for us to consume food in its WHOLE form because all the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and enzymes are together in one package and work synergistically together to bring your body the nutrition that it needs.  When you take one part away from the whole, you get “Synthetic”, “Isolated” or “Fractionated” pieces of the whole, but it is simply not the same.  Often times, since there are missing components when you take a synthetic supplement, your body can’t even use the synthetics. Talk about a waste of money!

If the generally accepted belief is that whole foods are better for you than refined foods why should it be any different for vitamins?

It isn’t any different, the wool has just been temporarily pulled over your eyes.
In summary, be sure you read your labels!  It is important to educate yourself about what you’ll be putting into your body and supplements are no different than anything else.
Whenever possible consume whole foods for vitamins and nutrients and when absolutely necessary turn to a whole foods supplement instead of a synthetic one.  See the difference below where Juice Plus carries a Nutrition Fact Label (which means it is FOOD) and Supplements carry a Supplement Facts label.  Which one would you rather put in your body or your child’s? Plus we provide it free for your child for four full years with an adult product purchase.  It doesn’t get an easier than that!

How to Prevent Cancer with Cruciferous Vegetables – Week 40 of 52 Weeks of Wellness

In our quest to increase our plant food intake, let’s take a closer look at cruciferous vegetables. It is vital to understand the benefits especially for individuals with cancer as it can greatly benefit those who incorporate them into their daily dietary regimen. You’ve heard me say it before, whoever eats the most fruits, vegetables, and greens at the end of the day, WINS!

First, what does the word cruciferous actually mean? Cruciferous is defined as plants related to the mustard family; a plant with four leaves; and or a plant bearing the resemblance of a cross.

Cruciferous vegetables contain phytochemicals, which are non-nutritive plant chemicals that have protective or disease preventive properties. Because of these phytochemicals, a review of research published in the October 1996 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that 70% or more of the studies found a link between cruciferous vegetables and protection against cancer.

For cancer prevention or healing from cancer, incorporate more cruciferous vegetables and less fruit. The anti-cancer properties of cruciferous vegetables come specifically from the phytochemicals called isothiocyanates, which stimulate our bodies to break down potential carcinogens. These phytochemicals are nature’s perfect way to detox our bodies.

The following vegetables fall into the cruciferous category: broccoli, Brussel sprouts, kale, turnips, cauliflower, bok choy, rutabaga, Nappa cabbage, mustard greens, arugula, watercress, radish, and daikon radish (Japanese radish).

Wondering how to prepare these amazing veggies?

Lightly steam or saute for 5-7 minutes in coconut or grapeseed oil or better yet, juice these with a bit of fruit each morning (just enough to make it palatable). Keeping the enzymes intact by consuming raw will further benefit your body along with maintaining the vitamins and minerals that are lost in cooking.

For those healing from cancer, it is crucial to consume about 50% or more of your total daily intake from raw fruits, veggies, and greens. Always consume as much produce grown locally, picked at the peak of ripeness, grown without pesticides or herbicides. Locate a local farmer, CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), or grow your own produce. If you are short of land and/or time or do not have a green thumb, consider aeroponics or hydroponics. Lastly, supplementing with a whole food concentrate is key as well to ensure a variety daily.

Week 40 Action Step:

What is/are your favorite cruciferous vegetables and the tastiest way to prepare/recipe?? Tell us in the comments below.

This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs.  Oh sorry, wrong post.  Talk about effective marketing!? Every time I see a photo of an egg it takes me back to that classic and powerful commercial. Although the commercial was targeting recreational drugs, the sad part is that we are using and abusing prescription medication at a much higher rate and it has become completely accepted in society.

I can’t remember the last time I’ve taken an over-the-counter or prescription medication.  The reason I don’t remember is because it has been such a long time since I’ve used them.  And yes, I’m quite proud of that.  I have God to thank for showing me the power of whole food nutrition to heal my body naturally.  Whole foods have healed my body from allergies, asthma, IBS, obesity, high cholesterol and even depression.

With all the side effects experienced from the medications my doctors recommended for the above list, I decided that wasn’t the route for me.  Many people think that because they are prescriptions, they have to be safe or they wouldn’t be on the market.

According to the CDC, more people die from prescription medication than they do from heroin or cocaine. Deaths from prescription narcotics have increased fourfold.

Prescription drugs are handed out like candy and speaking of candy, it has become socially accepted to place our children on medications for conditions that could be managed through whole foods, discipline and structure. ADD and ADHD are two health issues that can easily be eliminated through whole food consumption and elimination of processed foods.

As for me, my focus these days is on preserving my brain cells.  I did enough damage in my youth and ignorance that it is time to take responsibility and control of my health.  What about you? What is one simple step that can get you closer to improving your health, increasing your energy or losing a few pounds?  Skip the 400 calorie artificial stimulant beverage loaded with sugar? Stop bringing home the soft drinks, chips or cookies?  It’s all about discipline and taking action with one simple step forward. What is your’s going to be?

Are you Toxic?

Are you toxic? A better question would be, “is your body toxic”.  Living in the world today, everyone has some level of toxicity. I strive to detox my body at least three times per year. Or some do when the seasons change so it’s easier to remember. I don’t recommend a single organ cleanse but all major organs including the brain. These comprehensive detoxes are most effective. I have clients start with a simple 14 day protocol and once they get the hang of it and realize how easy it is, I encourage them to continue for a full month.

What are the different types of toxins?

Heavy metals are what most people test and include lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and aluminum are the most common. There are also the xenoestrogens too which include: dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites, bisphenols, alkylphenols, dichlorophenols, methoxychlor, chlordecone, polychlorinated benzol derivatives (PCBs), and dioxins. Xenoestrogens are toxic estrogens and hormone disruptors to our delicate balance of hormones.

You can learn more about toxicity and take the quick quiz. Once you complete the quiz, add up your points. At the end check out your score to see if your body is toxic.

Health Issues from Toxicity

Your Body’s Cry For Help: Toxicity

Have you been feeling healthy lately?  If you find yourself suffering from sickness or fatigue you may not be eating for optimal wellness.
Are you…

  • Feeling tired, sluggish, lethargic
  • Having trouble concentrating and staying focused
  • Experiencing headaches
  • Experiencing joint pain
  • Catch colds easy
  • Having trouble sleeping
  • Suffering from bad breath
  • Emitting an unpleasant body odor
  • Having frequent gas, bloating or indigestion
  • Suffering from allergies and/or food sensitivities
  • Noticing skin problems like acne, psoriasis, eczema
  • Experiencing constipation and other gastrointestinal irregularities
  • Feeling depressed, irritable or noticing mood changes
  • Having recurrent respiratory problems
  • Suffering from back pain, hemorrhoids or sinus congestion

These are common signs of toxcicity and are your body’s way of asking for help.

“The intestine may harbor the seeds of disease in the form of a false lining that blocks nutrient absorption and creates toxicity.  Many illnesses such as a number of cancers, most allergies, infections, liver diseases, acne, psoriasis, and asthma start in the intestine.  The intestine becomes clogged, toxic, and diseased by what and how we eat and by how poorly we eliminate waste material.  Once the bowel is toxic, it creates toxicity for the entire body and an inability to absorb the nutrients necessary for health and healing.”  (Diamond M.D., Cowden M.D., Goldberg)

Toxicity can be directly tied to constipation and improper digestion which brings to light the importance of fiber. Read more about fiber and how to help toxicity here: http://wp.me/p1drJP-IF
