Tips for Reducing Stress

It seems that now more than ever many Americans are too stressed out. With work, family, the economy it can become easy to feel overwhelmed and consumed by even the smallest of tasks. Constantly exposing yourself to stressful situations takes not only a mental toll, but can be physically taxing on your body. With increased stress becomes increased risk of stroke, heart disease and even cancer.

Understandably, you cannot remove all the stresses from your life. But with some simple strategies you can get better at managing the stress you have.  These include:  working out, deep breathing, prayer, meditation, eating right, let loose and have fun.  To be a healthy and happy individual stress reduction must occur; plain and simple.   • Keep a positive attitude.
  • Accept that there are events that you cannot control.
  • Be assertive instead of aggressive. “Assert” your feelings, opinions, or beliefs instead of becoming angry, defensive, or passive.
  • Learn and practice relaxation techniques. Deep breathing is a simple one.
  • Exercise regularly. Your body can fight stress better when it is fit.
  • Eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
  • Get enough rest and sleep. Your body needs time to recover from stressful events.
  • Don’t rely on pharmaceutical drugs to reduce stress.
  • Seek out social support.
  • Learn to manage your time more effectively.
