If you have not educated yourself on understanding genetically modified foods, then you should start now and keep reading. The first question is what is a genetically modified food? Monsanto takes DNA strands from insects and insert this DNA into food crops to make them more resistant to pests. GMO corn, for example, is designed to explode the stomachs of insects when they eat it.

When we eat the GMO plant, or the flesh, milk or eggs from those animals that did, we bring that mutated insect DNA into our bodies.

Who could think that this same effect wouldn’t impact the cells in our stomachs and especially our children’s?  Think about all the leaky-gut and intestinal issues that we suffer from. How could anyone think that GMO’s are safe and aren’t having a long-term serious impact on our health?

In 1992, the FDA stated there is no safety testing required for GMO’s and left it up to Monsanto’s own scientists to decide. Does anyone else have a concern letting Monsanto decide our fate?

Twenty years later independent research shows that GMO’s cause tumors and infertility in lab animals. Cattles, pigs and chickens fed GMO grains are sicker and require more antibiotics than ever before. Cows and pigs also experience arthritic conditions.

Other conditions linked to GMO foods are birth defects. GMO crops are designed to be tolerant to the pesticide Roundup, letting growers use more Roundup without damaging crops. GMO foods contain high concentrations of Roundup. Some areas where Roundup is used show a 70% increase in birth defects. Glyphosate, the chemical in Roundup, causes reduction in trace minerals in foods which are crucial to life. The chemical also has estrogenic properties and increases breast cancer proliferation rate.

We also have 5 million kids with food allergies, which are issues that we’ve never seen before. Let’s look at the escalation in leaky gut and intestinal permeability. This is where food is leaking into the bloodstream and creating antibodies. The reaction by these foods in the bloodstream causes allergic reactions.

So what can you do? First of all, support the environment and protect your family by purchasing nonGMO/organic foods. Support organizations that inform and protect us from GMO crops and educate yourself through watching documentaries such as Genetic Roulette and reading websites like www.nongmoproject.org. The NONGMO Project is a non-profit organization committed to preserving and building resources of non-GMO products, educating consumers and providing verified nonGMO choices. Genetic Roulette is an absolute must-see to understand the impact of GMO’s.

The top 8 GMO ingredients to avoid are:

  1. Soy
  2. Cottonseed
  3. Corn
  4. Canola Oil
  5. Papaya
  6. Alfalfa
  7. Sugar Beets
  8. Milk

Even if you don’t use these  in your home, I’m sure your favorite restaurant does. Some restaurants will tout the use of hormone and antibiotic free meats. Although this is a great first step, a bigger concern was that the majority of the menu items that contain GMO’s!

So, how can you avoid or reduce your family’s exposure to GMO’s?  Look for the NONGMO stamp, buy from a trusted local farmer or a certified organic farmer.
